Nothampton Update 2008

Northampton & District Carnation Society. Update. July 2008.

We had a stand at Duston Community Show & a member of the public commented that the Northampton website had not been updated for two years. We have now found a gentleman to update it for us, Roy Child, thanks for his help.

A belated report of N.D.C.S activities since the last web entry.

The society at the time of the 2007 AGM, had reached crisis point. An emergency committee was found at the last moment comprising of Chairman Joy Hayward, Treasurer Shirley Shurvinton, Show Manager Neville Smith, Eileen Hundley, Sue Palmer and Harry Bradley. We concluded it did not need too many people as long as we had help at shows etc., and we do. Financially we had to turn around Quickly as the losses were overtaking the income. We had numerous social events throughout the year and now have a healthy bank balance, even donating to charity. Many thanks to Shirley for keeping us straight and to Suzanne Hazlewood-Jones for balancing the books. Nev, Ray Ingram and Dale Coleman kept the Carnation side going with their comments and advice at each meeting. At last months meeting Ray inspected a display of dwarf-mini pinks, a few he said were suitable for showing. Most being garden pinks, which most of us grow. Social events of which we usually have one per month, have been the mainstay of the fundraising. Between sixteen to thirty people enjoying themselves and making money at the same time. Can’t be bad. The year usually starts with a visit to see snowdrops followed by a lunch at Ravensthorpe pub. This venue seems to be the favourite eating house. The bluebells at Coton Manor usually follows and this year we had a coach trip to Wisley to see the spring flowers – wonderful! The Carnation show and pinks day at Wisley was next, we did have a few members turn up – the M40 and M25 are not the best of roads. The Area Show at Wyevale was next on the agenda. This was a successful event with 16 competitors and this time the public came to view the marvellous variety of flowers. Many people commented that they had no idea there were so many varieties, the perfume was mentioned every time. A strawberry tea, Uppingham Show, lunch at Arthurs, fish and chips at Nev’s – these are future social events arranged for this year. The next Northampton Show is the BNCS one at Bells in Towcester on the 15 –16th July 2008. However, the next local society show will be at Boothville Community Centre on the 26th July 2008. This will incorporate fruit, vegetables, cakes etc. We are trying to make our own Horticultural show this year with the proceeds going to the Centre itself plus Favell House.
