The standard in the perpetual carnation classes was the best I’ve seen this season so far with several exhibitors sharing the prizes. I set off on the 250 mile trip full of hope with a good cut of blooms that I was very happy with, alas I didn’t win many prizes but I was well satisfied that my blooms were good and very competitive.

The top class asks for five vases of five blooms 4 separate cultivars and one vase of growers choice. There were 4 entries in a very competitive class. Jim Linnell won the class with Joanne’s Highlight, Clara, Crompton Princess, Linfield Annies Fancy, and a mixed vase of Clara & Crompton Princess. I was second with Kristina, Schubert, Bob’s Highlight, Irene Ann and Cariba. Brian Dean was third with two vases of Joanne’s Highlight, Annie Claybourne, Bob’s Highlight, and Linfield Annies Fancy.
Ron Hill was unplaced with a good entry.

The vase of 12 attracted a large entry with Brian Dean winning the class with a mixture of the same varieties he showed in his five vase entry. Jim Linnell was second with Clara, Crompton Classic, Linfield Annies Fancy, and Doris Allwood.
Third prize went to Mr T R Willis of Filey with Aicardi. Ann Franklin, John Falkner and Irene Ann. Brian Deans vase got the best individual vase in the show, but it was Mr Willis’s vase that impressed me more than any other it has everything size, colour and excellent uniformity in the vase.

In the vase of six blooms Mr Willis came up trumps with an excellent vase of Kristina. Second went to Brian Dean with Linfield Annie’s Fancy, Crompton Princess, and Crompton Classic. Neil Evans was third with Cariba, Athletic Schubert, Fancy Schubert, and Joanne’s Highlight.

The single vases of three blooms in colours brought wins for, Brian Dean with Crompton Princess. J Newton of Staley Bridge with Joanne’s Highlight. Brian Dean with Annie Claybourne. Mr T R Willis with Aicardi. Myself with Arthur Holmes. Jim Linnell with Clara. J Newton With Anders Sundance. Brian Dean with a purple seedling. Brian Dean with Crompton Classic. T R Willis with Kristina. Brian Dean with Audry Robinson.

In the pinks classes Mr & Mrs Willis had a clean sweep with some excellent vases.
