2nd June 2005,
The special Pinks day at Wisley was certainly an important day in the carnation year. As promoted on this website the day provided some excellent lectures on Pinks as well as the opportunity for enthusiasts to see the judges at work in the trail grounds and to question them. For those unable to attend I have added one or two pictures to give a flavour of the event.
The Society’s stand is shown as always inviting new members to join. (Non members can download an application form from this site).

The day started with an excellent talk on pinks from Sue Russell which certainly inspired all those present.
Throughout the day demonstrations of flower arranging with the emphasis on dianthus were performed by Joy Haywood. As always these were popular and informative.
John Whetman gave a very interesting talk on hybridising pinks with his vast experience in this field. I took the opportunity of suggesting to him that their nursery should host an open day for the Society’s members and we have tentatively agreed that a date in June would be best next year, if Council agree. It is still in the planning phase; watch this space! Later Tim Lamb gave a talk on the range of pinks which could be used in the garden.
Jim Marshall gave a talk on Malmaisons which certainly taught me a lot. So much so that I thought I would add a separate page devoted to this group.

Below is a picture of judging the PF trials. As well as showing some eminent members of the Joint Committee it shows us amateurs what two year old PF plants should look like! (I think I must feed my plants a bit more).

Jim also gave a practical demonstration of propagating Pinks, Borders, Malmaisons and PF,s. In this he was assisted by a number of experts from the floor!
Finally Eileen Galbally gave a well illustrated talk on Border carnations. For once I was able to understand the classification of these flowers! With her personal reflections it rounded off a truly excellent day.
