At the Harrogate spring flower show, the BNCS were invited by the committee of the Harrogate Great Yorkshire Show to stage a similar display at their event in July.

Never having attended previously, the Great Yorkshire show was a challenge the BNCS were keen to take up in order to spread the word about growing Carnations to the 120 thousand or so visitors who attend the event each year.

Set up day was Monday the 7th July when Gary Hammerton and Brian Hunt turned up at the Harrogate show ground at 9am with the display boards, banners, flowers and plants which were going to be sold to help BNCS Society funds.
Shortly after Peter and Kathy Booker arrived and the display was agreed, set up and staged by about 1pm. Joy Hayward and Nev Smith then arrived to add the finishing touches to the stand with 6 floral art decorations featuring Carnations in their full glory.
This added the final touches to the stand and after last minute re-arrangements to the display, we left the showground, leaving the stand to be judged by the Harrogate Judging committee at 8am on Tuesday 8th July 2008.

I am delighted to report the display was awarded a ‘Silver Gilt’ prize and received many favorable comments from the visiting public over the 3 days of the show, which closed at 5pm on Thursday 10th July, when flowers and remaining plants were sold off to last minute bargain hunters.

I am delighted to report that the Society have been invited to put on a similar arrangement next year with the possibility of a mini show to give the visiting public opportunity to see the many different varieties and colours of Pinks, Borders and P.F’s available.
Special thanks are sent to the flower committee at the Great Yorkshire Show in particular, Mr Joe Maiden for making our first visit a special and memorable occasion.
Now then team, what about going for ‘Gold’ next year…………………!
