The BNCS annual visit took place on Tuesday 10th of June 2008 to Southview Nursery. It was a glorious summer day the visit was much enjoyed by all those members who attended. We were welcomed by Mark and Elaine Trenear, the owners, who greeted us all with coffee and biscuits.

There was then a tour of the gardens where many pinks were displayed together with beautiful displays of herbaceous perennials.

The nursery specialises in these together with holding a National Collection of dianthus (the reason we went there). After this when everyone had arrived we moved to a marquee in the grounds to listen to one of Marks fascinating lectures on the history of dianthus.

Mark started explaining the history of his nursery which was set up by his grandfather. He then went on to describe in detail the history of dianthus combining historical records and early paintings together with actual specimens of species pinks and dianthus and some of the oldest varieties still available. I have heard Mark talk on a number of occasions and always learn something new. Everyone, even the most experienced members, found his talk fascinating.

Afterwards members strolled down the lane to the Chequers Inn to enjoy lunch.

In the afternoon we moved to the nursery itself and saw the workings of the business. Everyone had the opportunity to purchase a little bit of the history of dianthus to take home and grow in the years ahead to remind them of the visit and above all to preserve some of these historic plants.

As well as being in a delightful rural setting there was the added attraction of a rhea farm next door!
A very great thank you to Mark and Elaine for a very memorable day. As a mark of our appreciation, the society presented Mark with a complete set of our old yearbooks on cd. I am sure they will be well used by such a historian!
