BNCS June Show 2006

The BNCS Show for 2006 was held at Wisley over two days, the 13th and 14th June (the 2nd day coincided with Pinks Day and will be reported separately. For exhibitors, it was an early start, the hall opening at 7.30am (of course, a lot of work had been done the evening before, setting up by Alex Ketchen and Nev Smith). We often forget to sing their praises! Here is a picture of the hall before staging, and here is the final result.

In all there were eight exhibitors with dozens of exhibits and here are some blooms arriving.

Here are some views of the staging process.

As well as careful meticulous work, it is the opportunity to meet with old friends and new members. I think we should put an article on this site about staging, keep looking in! This should help the novice exhibitor and hopefully encourage people to start exhibiting. I am sure you agree the display is impressive, but of course, nowhere near the size of shows from fifty years ago. Here are the stuards at work.

Amongst the PFs there was keen competition, though Maurice Woodfield clearly had the upper hand years of experience showing through. The PFs this year being judged this year by Doug Cottam, the pinks by Denis Franklin. One of his entries ‘Olive Tolley’ was given an award of garden merit.

Amongst the pinks, the standard was high and the competition even more intense. Of particular interest is this which was entered by our President, a truly remarkable bloom, with an interesting history, which will soon appear on this site.

I was particularly interested in the miniature exhibits; after obtaining some plants from John Whetman, I may be tempted to have a go next year.

Eileen Galbally, after many years of writing the show reports, has finally handed over the reins to Nev Smith, but was seen giving him help and guidance.

The weather on the first day was glorious, if anything, a little too warm, but on the second it was slightly cooler and perfect. Judging of the PFs trials took place by the Joint Committee on the Tuesday and interested members were allowed to observe.

Once again another superb show, novices are always encouraged to exhibit at all our shows around the country, don’t hesitate to enter – the show schedules can be downloaded from this site. The next show is at Towcester on the 11th July and we are expecting a bumper show with border carnations and pinks at their peak.
