Bakewell Show is one of the British National Carnation Societies regional shows with 22 classes for Perpetual Carnations and 14 classes for Pinks. It was a long journey for me but very worthwhile meeting my carnation friends and also very many vegetable growers that I have known for very many years. It was a very good show with a lot of entries. There were as many as 12 entries in some of the classes.
Perpetuals.
The top class for Perpetuals calls for 3 vases of 5 blooms, this was won by myself with vases of Cariba, Irene Ann and Schubert, Jim Linnell was second with Crompton Classic, Crompton Princess and Joanne’s Highlight. James Haigh was third with Crompton Princess, Linfield Annie’s Fancy and Bob’s Highlight.

The class for 12 blooms was also won by myself with a vase of Cariba, This vase was awarded the Gold Medal for best vase of Perpetuals. Second went to Barry Gamble with a good vase of Max Helliwell and third to Jim Linnell With Crompton Princess.

The vase of 5 selfs was won by Barry Gamble with White Kath Phillips, second went to James Haigh with Cariba and third to Albert Holmes with a mixed vase.

The vase of 5 fancies was won by James Haigh with Linfield Annie’s Fancy, second went to Albert Holmes with Bob’s Highlight and third to Myself with Kristina.

In the coloured classes for 3 blooms. I had wins with a vase of 2 Schubert and 1 Bob’s Highlight. A vase of Athletic Schubert. A vase of Irene Ann. A vase of Arthur Holmes. A vase of Crompton Princess. George Holmes won with Joanne’s Highlight. And a vase Fancy Schubert. John Newton with Cariba.

In the single bloom classes there were wins for, Reg Willis with John Falkner, Barry Gamble with Joanne’s Highlight and Ann Franklin, Myself with Arthur Holmes, James Haigh with Cariba, Reg Willis with Irene Ann, Jeffery Slone with Crompton Classic, and Dave Murray with Janelle Welch.

In the scented classes Barry Gamble won the single bloom with Crompton Classic and Jim Linnell won the vase of 3 blooms with Clara’s Lass.
Pinks
Mr & Mrs Willis won the Gold Medal with a lovely vase of 12 Anders Patricia Griffiths.
They also won the 3 vase class with Sutton Brierley Grace, Olivia Newby and a vase of a red variety (I didn’t get the name) R Taylor was second and John Newton 3rd.

In the vases of 3 stems there were wins for, R Taylor with Lillie Brooks, and again with Mary Richardson. Mr & Mrs Willis with Welton Beck, and also Anders Patricia Grifiths. Graham Davis with Hillary Fleet. And John Newton with Olivia Newby.

In the single stem classes there were wins for, R Taylor with Lillie Brooks. Graham Davies with Anders Fay Seagrave, and with Pamela Fleet Supreme, and also Hillary Fleet. Barry Gamble with Sutton Indian Silk, James Haigh with Olivia Newby.
