Council member Gary Hammerton has been spending part of the dreary winter in Spain and has missed all the wet weather we have been enjoying in the UK. I am sure you will all be pleased to know that he has been looking out for Spanish carnations to report about here on the website. He has sent me the following pictures and brief report.
“I have taken 4 good photos of ‘CLAVEL’ on sale
outside a florists shop in the main street in Santa Pola, about 4 miles south of Alicante city. They were in full bloom and looked really good.”

Gary will be busy on his return getting ready for the Harrogate Spring Show. He will be helping Peter Booker put on a BNCS stand for us. We wish them well.
Since his return Gary says “I go back in May and will be on the lookout for more plants to photograph.
My Spanish is basic to say the least, which is not helping in trying to identify where the local (Spanish) Garden Centres get their supply of Clavel from.
If I can find this out then I will do a report in due course for the interest of our BNCS members.
Thus far all the ones I have seen on sale are clean and free of pests. I am keen to find out if they have the same problems we do with pests such as Red Spider and fungus outbreaks similar to Rust etc.
If it transpires they have similar problems then I will try to identify how they tackle/treat the outbreak.”
