Carnation Fever Hits Fashion World

As a member of the British National Carnation Society I was thrilled when my husband came back from London a couple of weeks ago with the London Evening Standard newspaper, for in the pages of this paper, was an article by Laura Craik a Fashion Editor in Paris. This article was describing the recent fashion show of Christian Lacroix on the Parisian catwalk.

Monsieur Lacroix, the article informs us, is a huge fan of the carnation! All his fashion shows end with the designer walking out to his adoring public, whilst carnation petals rain down on him.. On every seat in the auditorium there is placed a carnation for the lucky recipient to take home with them. This winter show went even further in portraying the designer’s love of the carnation, for virtually every item was adorned with oversized silk carnations! Corsages on lapels of narrow jackets or at the waist of a cocktail dress. The show was suitably entitled ‘Scent of a Woman’, and featured clothes in every carnation hue available.

I expect many visitors to this site will not have heard of this famous designer. Reader, your author has, but cannot probably aspire to owning a Lacroix design (at around £10,000 for a dress, it is out of my price range). If some of you remember the BBC programme ‘Absolutely Fabulous’, the character played by Jennifer Saunders, was mad about Lacroix, and indeed the designer himself even appeared in the show as a cameo part. All this aside it is wonderful to think that high profile people promote our glorious bloom, and encourage others to appreciate its fine qualities.
