Welcome to Garden News Readers

A very warm welcome from the British National Carnation Society to Garden News readers who have logged on to our website after reading Peter Booker’s articles on carnations and pinks.

The BNCS is delighted that after a period when the gardening press have not featured our chosen plants, a prestigious paper is running articles on dianthus throughout the year. Peter Booker is an expert in this field. His relaxed and chatty style of writing is easy to read but filled with detailed information and advice which will guide the novice and experienced grower alike.

The British National Carnation Society is keen to promote all aspects of cultivation of dianthus. The genus includes Pinks which can be grown in the garden, in containers and for show, including old fashioned and modern hybrids; Perpetuals which are the classic florist carnation; Spray carnations which are similar but multi-bloomed; Border carnations which are hardy and flower in the summer; Malmaisons, annuals, alpines and miniatures. There really is something for everyone.

Members include enthusiasts who hybridise and produce new varieties, commercial growers, exhibitors who show at our national and regional shows, gardeners who cultivate pinks and borders in their beds, patio gardeners using pinks in containers and hanging baskets, and an increasing number of amateurs who grow flowers in their glasshouse or garden for cut blooms (rather than buying flowers flown half way round the world from the supermarket or florists)!

Peter has refered to our dianthus nurseries pages. These are found under “Links”. From here there are direct links to nurseries with websites and for others where we have current catalogues these are available as downloads in PDF format. (Many nurseries offer BNCS members a 10% discount). If anyone is aware of nurseries selling Dianthus which are not included do let the Web Editor know.

We hope you enjoy our site (parts of which are still under construction)! Above all we hope you enjoy growing your chosen dianthus. And perhaps some of you will join our Society! Click here for membership benefits and here for a membership form.
