To a Picotee, 1935

To a Picotee.

Halo of Loveliness! If I were King,
And all the glorious gardens my domain, To Thee, already crowned with scarlet ring,
I’d give the power as Fairy Queen to reign. Adhering mists, that clinging to thy form, Turn into fragrant globules of delight, Dispersed by wind and sun as soon as born,
Making the garden sweeter in their flight. Thy namesake “Fair Maiden,” at beauty’s call,
To mirrowed face, her crowning bloom applies, Whilst Thou, serene, regardless of it all,
With nature’s sweetness cheers admiring eyes. Halo of Loveliness! If we could give,
And getting no return, spread gifts like thee, This world would be a better place to live, And we’d learn wisdom from a picotee.
