The President 1994 – Tom Gillies

Thank you for electing me your President for 1994. It is a great honour and I will do my best to carry on the high standards set by my predecessors.
My wife Ruth and I run a small Pink and Carnation Nursery north of Bolton, from where we supply plants to Garden Centres and Nurseries.
We have also operated a Mail Order Business for the last twelve years, so frequently meet and speak to members of the Society.
Most of the area Societies report a high level of interest in growing Perpetual Flowering Carnations and Pinks with Border Carnations remaining on an even keel, and Society membership rising.
How many of our Members can remember MALMAISONS? I have been growing Carnations since 1962 but only saw my first one two years ago! Malmaisons which originate from the variety Old Blush (Souvenir de la Malmaison) raised in 1857 and still going strong, are making a come back.
There areseveral varieties available with can produce flowers of 5” plus diameter and all are highly scented.
So perhaps in 1995 they may be back in our Show Schedules. I think they would go down well in the RHS Halls at Westminster.
As the show entries are dropping at Westminster due to midnight trains being withdrawn etc, I invite my Perpetual Flowering Carnation growing friends from the North and from the Midlands to get together and hire transport and let’s make the 4th and 5th October 1994 B.N.C.S. Show at the R.H.S. Halls, Westminster something a little special.
