The President 1990 JOHN GALBALLY

To have been elected President of our Society is an honour of which I am immensely proud. Ours is not among the largest of specialist societies but is possibly the friendliest. I take pleasure from the fact that we are increasing our membership steadily year by year, which is easier for our Society’s officers to adjust to than a severely fluctuating membership. The number of affiliated societies also continues to rise steadily; local societies are very welcome in these days of expensive and sometimes unreliable transport.
Our Society is fortunate in having dedicated officers managing it, all acting unpaid. I remember a president who invariably began ‘It would be invidious to single out a few names’ etc. which meant that he never really thanked anyone for their services. Our General Secretary, Phyllis Dimond, seems to take the work all in her stride and without apparent effort, but the Council are fully aware how much work she gets through to keep the wheels oiled. Our Treasurer, Fred Smith, takes all the financial problems off our shoulders while Arthur Robinson and Terry Pepper ensure the smooth running of our shows. Helene Keates has encouraged the spread of floral art at our shows and Bill Randells produces the Year Book that we all impatiently await each summer.
Our thanks are due also to many others, particularly exhibitors and judges, and the editors and their writers of those gardening periodicals which give us valuable free publicity. Long may they all continue to assist our Society to grow from strength to strength.
