The President 1989 RAY KNIGHT

The earliest time I can recall when I first took note of Carnations was as a lad in the early nineteen forties when I used to help my Father tend his garden, although I must admit sometimes reluctantly; along with the vegetables, roses and sweet peas were beds of Border Carnations, of which he was ‘as I thought at the time’ over fussy about, that was until I saw a vase containing about twelve blooms staged in our sitting room. I remember thinking what beautiful flowers plucked from weeds grown in the garden, and it must have been the vision of those flowers planted in my mind that prompted me to take up growing Carnations years later as a hobby. Over these later years, I have met and made many friends through growing and exhibiting Carnations, and it’s a pleasure for me to meet them, be it only once a year.
It may be down to the fact that I have been involved with the Notts. Society as Secretary and President that I have gathered so many new friends, you could say perks of the job. Friends sharing the same interest plus a few red cards thrown in each year; who could ask for more?
Although I helped the Notts. Society through a difficult period in the early nineteen seventies as Secretary, it was only with the aid of other ardent members past and present that we now feel secure as a Carnation Society. Of course, granting of the B.N.C.S. Area Shows, helps usagreat deal but basically it’s down to team effort for any Society to survive.
Therefore, in accepting the Honour bestowed on me as President of the British National Carnation Society, I take it as recognition of the Notts. Society as a whole.
I am aware of the distinguished and knowledgeable persons I follow as President. I am also aware of the endless work carried out by our B.N.C.S. Council and Officials. Good reasons surely, for me to do my upmost to promote the aims and interests of the B.N.C. Society and the Dianthus Family.
Thank you all for electing me your President on the 40th anniversary of the B.N.C.S.
