The President 1988 BILL RANDELLS

It seems only a short while since I began growing and exhibiting Pinks and Carnations and yet on reference to old prize cards I find that it will soon be thirty years. When I received my first Year Book the names of some of the listed Council members were already known to me, either because of their commercial connections or their writings. Among them were S. J. Bailey, E. Engelmann, R. G. Allwood, S. L. Lord, F. R. McQuown and believe it or not Mrs. E. Galbally and John Galbally and I could not fail to be impressed now that I had joined such an exhalted company. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would one day be accorded the honour of election to President of the Society as at that time my only ambition was to win a Silver Medal at a National Show.
According to the Society’s records whilst it has been established for sixty four years only forty two people have held the office of President and it is worth noting that Lady Presidents have held the office on fifteen occasions. I wonder how many other National Horticultural Societies have such an admirable record?
When I note the number of years devoted by previous Presidents to the promotion of Dianthus and the Society my own contribution appears very small but I trust that I shall be able to maintain the standards set by my predecessors and I thank you all for the honour you do me.
