BNCS June Webletter

Another month has gone by. I hope you all enjoy the changes to the site.

There are some more articles written by members. Jim Marshall has sent an interesting article on The Legendary Malmaison You can of course see his catalogue under links. There is also A Brief Overview of Carnations and Pinks by Mick Walters. Do please send any other articles for publication to the web editor, electronically if possible and with any pictures at least 325pixels wide. (Sorry to be technical. Anything will do.) With the show season starting any show reports or visits to nurseries of other places of interest to Dianthus enthusiasts are most welcome. In particular any overseas contributions are sought!

There is a report on the RHS Show at Chelsea though sadly it does not contain many carnations.

June is a busy month for the Society. June 6th is our visit to Whetmans Nursery Last minute information is updated on this site. Any late bookings MUST be made via the secretary dianthusinduncote@tiscali.co.uk For those who are unable to attend I hope to have a full report on this site soon after the event.
Then on 13th and 14th June we have the June Show at Wisley and on the 14th Pinks Day. Members are reminded that their BNCS tickets will admit on both days. The lectures last year were excellent and I am sure this year will be just as good. Do try and attend and encourage friends to go. With access to the gardens at Wisley this is a superb day out.

In the PF house ventilation becomes increasingly important as temperatures rise. Disbudding becomes almost a daily task; a relaxing past time for the amateur grower but I am sure more of a headache for the professional. With the wet May in the South snails are still a problem. Spray regularly for red spider and rust. As plants grow rapidly they need support.
Before:-

and after:-

Borders are forming flower spikes and need support and disbudding.

Exhibition Pinks will again need support.

Annual carnations should be planted out in to their flowering positions.

Garden pinks are sending up flower spikes and for very little work will soon be a mass of colour. This is the time to start planning new plantings in the garden.

For all those planning to exhibit at the June Show good luck.

Last month I meant to show you all pictures of the carnations I received from John Barrington but forgot to put it up on the site.

Here they are!
