How much do you love these wonderful flowers? Do you love them enough to see that more people are encouraged to grow them too?
The membership of our Society has dropped very considerably during the past few years, for various reasons. You may wonder what this has to do with you. Well, you can help to increase the membership again by introducing at least one new member this year. Your neighbour or fellow allotment-holder may be a very keen, good gardener—have a chat about Pinks or Borders—give him a few cuttings and an application form to join the B.N.C.S. There is a pleasure in doing someone a good turn and this could be some pleasure to you in this vital year of our Society. There are numbers of people growing Pinks and Borders in their gardens who have had no thought of joining a national society because they think there are no benefits for them. Let me hasten to say that the benefits are unlimited. The advice and experience of the country’s expert growers is on hand for the asking, and surely this is worth a subscription once a year. In addition there is always top class literature and admission to the Society’s Shows and then, last but not least, the privilege of staging at the Society’s Shows from time to time.
Please give some thought to these few words—I leave the notes and articles on culture and growing of these most beautiful flowers to experts to deal with, but appeal to you to help to at least double our number of members this year—the additional finance would enable the Society to sponsor more Shows in the Provinces, which, I am sure, is what is needed by members all over the country.
The Greeks termed the Dianthus as the “Divine Flower” and when all the tints and hues are considered it is truly just that.
Act now and enlist at least one more to our ranks and I shall then feel that this challenge to you has not been in vain 1 !
