Trophies

The Daily Mail Gold cup, one of the Society’s most prestigious trophies – though by no means the oldest – is now deployed at the BNCS northern National Competition, which is held as part of the North of England Horticultural Society’s Show held annually at Harrogate in September. At this time of the year Pinks are scarce and Borders not in bloom, so naturally it is awarded for the championship classes for Perpetual Flowering Carnations.

The schedule for the Gold Cup Classes is suitably demanding It calls for four vases of PF’s, each of five blooms, and each with a different specifications : one vase of Selfs, one of Fancies, one of not less than three different cultivars, and -most important of all – a Vase of VERY HIGHLY-SCENTED blooms. These are always a centre of attraction for many visitors who come into the Specialist Societies’ marquee.
