INTRODUCTION
TROPHIESALL TROPHIES ARE CHALLENGE TROPHIES and MUST be returned for future companion. Tile presentation of the trophies will be made fallowing the AGM.
The pointing system for this schedule will be us follows and to cover all Divisions and Classes for all shows: First prize -4 points, Second prize -3 points. Third prize – 2 points. Highly Commended-1 point if in the judge’s opinion the difference between 3rd and 4th places are close. For the total points in a Division only the highest award in a class will be used if the exhibitor gains more than one place. If a tie occurs in the aggregate number of points, the competitor with the greatest number of First Prizes is the Winner. If a tie still occurs then the Second prizes or Third prizes are considered. If a tie still occurs then the competitor with the Best Exhibit wins.

Any classes that are sponsored will have the prize detailed in the schedule but only the above amounts will be used in

If the Winner wishes to donate their prize money, to save embarrassment please remind the Show Secretary at each
Show.
SPONSORED CLASSES
Should any Sponsor revoke a donation to the Prize Fund as primed in this Schedule, the BNCS reserves the right to pay such prize money as may be decided by the Executive Council for the classes concerned. Entries for sponsored classes will be accepted ONLY on this understanding.
TERMS OF COMPETITION
EXHIBITORS
Entries are open only to members of the BNCS. No entrance fee is required for any class.
EXHIBITS
All Carnations and Pinks exhibited in competition must be grown by the exhibitor for at least three months prior to the Show. The Society reserves the right to have the exhibitors’ gardens, or glasshouses inspected by their agents before and/or after the exhibition.
ENTRIES
A maximum of TWO entries from a single HOUSEHOLD is allowed in any ONE class, except where stated in the Schedule.
NOTIFICATION OF ENTRY
Exhibitors are requested to inform the Show Secretary at least SEVEN DAYS before the Show of the amount of entries for which they require space.
ENTRY CARDS
Cards corresponding lo the exhibits will be available on the day proceeding a Show. Extiibitors will be responsible for the placing of these cards and must satisfy themselves that the particulars oo the card are correct Cards are made out but exhibitors must complete UK Division and Class on both sides of the cards. All cards must be in position for judging.
Only BNCS cards are allowed. All cultivars must be correctly named but if not known, quote NOT KNOWN. In the case of close competition correct naming will be to the advantage of the exhibitor.
VASES or TUBES
All vases or tubes for the competition classes are provided by the RHS or a BNCS SOCIETY and must be used unless otherwise permitted. At the close of the Show these vases/tubcs must be left on the tables.
JUDGING
All judging will be in accordance with the latest edition of the BNCS publication “Rules for Judging, Standards and Classification”. Judging will take place as indicated on page 2 of the schedule for each Show. The Judges may withhold, at their discretion, any prize, medal card or trophy if in their opinion, exhibits are not of sufficiently high standard. The decision of the judges to be final.
STAGING
Classes with three or more vases per exhibit should be staged in line one behind the other.
HEIGHT (Vase must refer to the container supplied at the show)
Border exhibits MUST have a height of not less than nine inches to the bottom of the lowest flower and not more
than eighteen inches to the top of the highest flower from the top of the of the vase. Exhibits containing flowers below and above this measurement MUST be disqualified. This rule does not apply to vases containing five or more blooms.
Perpetual exhibits MUST have a height of not less than twelve inches to the bottom of the lowest flower and not more than twenty four inches to the top of the highest flower from the top of the of the vase. Exhibits containing flowers below and above this measurement MUST be disqualified. This rule does not apply to vases containing five or more blooms.
Pink exhibits MUST have a height of not less than five inches to the bottom of the calyx of the crown flower measured from the top of the vase. This rule applies to all vases, and exhibits containing flowers below this measurement MUST be disqualified, except for miniature or dwarf Pinks.
DISBUDDING
Perpetual Flowering and Border Carnations are shown as a bloom or blooms, this means that each flower stem MUST be disbudded. Perpetual Flowering Spray Carnations, only the crown bud or spent florets may be removed. Pinks must NOT be disbudded, but any spent florets must be removed. Pinks and PF Spray Carnations are shown as stem or stems.
FOLIAGE
All vases MUST include the appropriate Dianmus foliage, the same as the flower being shown. Vase containing NO foliage will be disqualified. It is recommended that material (such as reeds, oasis or the like) is used in the vases to facilitate the staging of flowers and that material used is concealed as much as possible by the appropriate Dianthus foliage.
DYED FLOWERS
Dyed flowers NOT allowed.
WIRING
Wiring of a stem is NOT allowed unless stated otherwise.
RHS REQUIREMENTS
Exhibitors at RHS locations, may stage from 3pm to 10pm on the day preceding the Show and from 7am to 10am, except Wisley 7am to 9am, on the morning of the competition, when all exhibitors must leave the Hall unless officially retained by the Show Secretary.
No exhibit may be removed until the official close of the Show. Exhibitors must inform the Show Secretary if they wish to have the flowers of their exhibits collected and must be there to do so. Otherwise the Society will dispose of the flowers and the proceeds from the sale will be added to the funds of the British National Carnation Society.
NOVICE STATUS
A Novice is a member who has never won a first prize in any Division other than NOVICES. No member can compete in the Novice Division if he/she has previously won the Novice Trophy. A member is NOT eligible to compete in the Novice Classes if he/she has won first prize at a Major Show such as Harrogate, Southport, Shrewsbury etc. or BNCS Area Shows. Also Shows organised by Affiliated Carnation Societies other than in the Novice Classes.
SOCIETY RESPONSIBILITY
Tne Society and its agents will not be responsible for any loss or damage sustained by exhibitors or their property, howsoever caused.
PROTEST
Any protest must be msde to the Show Secretary within one hour of the opening of the Show together with a fee of £1.00 which will be refunded if the protest is substantiated. No protest will be recognised unless specifically referring to an infringement of the Rules.
SPECIAL AWARDS|
Please note that in the event of the RHS awarding a BANKSIAN MEDAL for 2005, the award will be for the greatest amount of prize money won in the Borders divisions, at all Shows in this schedule, providing classes are available , totalled together. P.F.s and Pinks have classes in all three show where as Borders classes are only available in the June and July Shows.

Please nole: The Banksian Medal cannot be won by anyone who has won the award in the past two years or is a professional.
The definition of a professional is as follows:
“A person who gains his/her livelihood by growing plants, flowers, fruit or vegetables for sale or for an employer or anyone employed in the maintenance of a garden, pleasure ground or part.” If the items for show are grown in their own garden then these can be accepted as non-professional.

The calculation of the prize money for the Banksian award is as follows
“The BNCS prize money as stated in this schedule will apply to all classes even though some maybe sponsored at higher values. No sponsored money will be included for any reason, no cash adjustments will be made for trophy value or non cash prizes.”
The “SILVAPERL” Shield will be awarded to the exhibitor gaining MOST points to Division A & B at all three Shows combined in this schedule.
